STORK CALENDAR

January
White storks fly to and stay in Africa in the winter time. Every year several healthy birds stay in Poland.

February
The spring travels begin. The storks head for breeding grounds. Each day, they fly about       250 km.

March
At the beginning of the month, the birds cross the Suez Canal. Then they travel along the Mediterranean coast through Turkey and the Bosfor Strait to northern Europe. At the end of March the first storks come to Poland.

April
This is the time to choose a nest. The best location are the most popular and birds even fight for the nests. This is also when begin hatching eggs.

May
After 34 days, young birds appear in the nests. Parents raise and look after their chicklings.

June
Chickilngs grow very quickly. They are now able to stand up in the nest. It`s time to begin systematic exercises.

July
Young storks achieve size of the adult birds. Together with their parents they start to look for food. Also they practice flying.

August
Preparation for a long journey. Birds gather and form groups. At the end of the month most of them leave for the South.

September
Storks are on their way South. They may rest for one or two days, which is usually  enough for them. They stay in Izrael for a longer time (about 10 days). At the end of the month they arrive in Egipt.

October
Some birds stay in Sudan and Ethiopia. Most of them go further to the South of Africa.

November
Some birds stays in Kenya and Zambia. Others continue on traveling.

December
Strong birds may even get all the way  to the Republic of South Africa. This is the end of their journey.
